The purpose of the school health program will be to supplement the efforts and guidance of parents to bring about awareness on the part of students of regular health care.

The objectives of the school health program are:
1. To promote good health habits among students.
2. To stimulate a sanitary and healthful environment in school.
3. To assist in detecting and recommending correction for medical, psychological, and physical handicaps of students.

Health Records: Health records will be maintained by the nursing staff.

Athletic Physical Examinations: Annual examinations shall be required for participants in all athletic programs.

Annual Screening Programs: 

Vision screening will be planned and administered by nursing personnel for selected grades.
Hearing screening will be planned and administered by speech correctional personnel for selected grades.

Students will be screened for early signs of scoliosis (curvature of the spine) by screening selected grades annually.

Communicable Diseases: Students showing symptoms of a communicable disease, infectious condition, illness, or disability of a serious nature will be referred to the school nurse.

Special Physical Examinations: A physical may be requested by the building principal or Superintendent at times when serious doubts concerning the student’s health are evident.

Wellness Policy:

Intent:
Big Horn County School District #4 shall promote student well-being and academic
achievement by supporting quality nutrition and physical activity as part of the
learning environment. The district’s primary goal is to help students develop attitudes,
behaviors, and skills associated with lifelong healthful eating patterns as well as learn
the benefits of a physically active and healthful lifestyle.

 

Nutrition Education Goals
1. State and District health education curriculum standards and guidelines (of which
nutrition education is a component) shall be met or exceeded.
2. The staff teaching nutrition will be encouraged to pursue professional development
in the area of nutrition education that complies with current research-based
practices.
3. A balanced approach to promotion of student wellness and overall health will be
encouraged based on sound scientific principles
4. The School District will help to ensure that students receive consistent nutrition messages
throughout the school, classroom, and cafeteria.
5. The School District will help build awareness among school staff about the importance of
healthy eating habits and physical activity (Wellness Program with Gottsche).
6. The School District will encourage parents, teachers, school personnel, and students to
serve as role models in practicing healthy lifestyles.
7. Monthly menus and their nutritional analysis will be available for students, parents, staff,
and all stakeholders on the BGH4 website.

 

Physical Education Goals
1. State and District physical education curriculum standards and guidelines will be met or
exceeded.
2. Students will be given opportunities for physical activity during the school day through
daily recess periods and elective and mandatory physical education classes.
3. As a general rule, school staff is encouraged to use discipline that does not include
withholding activities.
4. The School District will provide environments that encourage safe and enjoyable activity
for all students.
5. The school will encourage families and community members to support programs
outside of the school that encourage physical activity.
6. Physical activity programs will be carried out in environments that reflect respect for
body-size differences and varying skill levels.

 

Nutrition Standards Goals
1. During each school day the nutrition services program will offer breakfast and lunch that
meet the guidelines of the USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.

2. The promotion of healthy foods—including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat
dairy products—is encouraged.
3. The School District shall provide appealing and attractive meals to children that offer a
variety of healthy foods including fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy
products.
4. Starting 2014/15 school year, vending machines available to students will be in
compliance with the Smart Snacks Rule. See this rule at:

Other School-Based Activities Designed to Promote Student Wellness Goals
1. Dining room supervisory staff shall maintain a safe, clean, and pleasant eating
environment.
2. Lunch periods will be scheduled as near to the middle of the day as possible.
3. Safe drinking water shall be available throughout the school day.
4. The School District will encourage fund raising efforts that are supportive of healthy
eating and physical activity.
5. The District will encourage recess before lunch to promote healthy eating appetites.
6. The District will encourage student participation in extracurricular activities.
Maintenance and utilization of a District Wellness Committee to monitor and review the

 

Wellness policy
1. The School District shall utilize a District School Improvement Committee that will help
with the monitoring and reviewing of the wellness policy each year. The Committee will
then report to the superintendent its recommendations for improvements and goals for
the next year.
2. It is recommended that the District Wellness Committee include: school nurse,
physical/health education teacher, parents, food service staff, students, school board
member(s), an administrator, other school member(s), and community members.
3. Each school’s administrator shall attempt to comply with all federal, state, and local
regulations pertaining to the wellness policy.
